'Artist Housing' brings together films that reflect on the state of London's housing - particularly artist housing provision, co-ops, and creative communities. Reflecting an array of experiences, these film and video works remind of us the ways in which artists drive many efforts to reimagine long-term housing models, and document their experiences of making and fighting for stability for their lives and livelihoods. We open up conversations around schemes of housing, the involvement of councils and organisations, and how communities are built, nurtured and maintained.
Selected works resonate with the A House for Artists project, the first of its kind in the UK, which provides subsidised housing for 14 artists and their families, in exchange for providing a free programme of cultural activity for their surrounding community.
Featuring artist films programmed by Abel Holsborough and Maria Anastassiou
With support from Cinema for All and the BFI.
A House for Artists was co-commissioned by Create London and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD); delivered by BeFirst and supported by the Mayor of London - and received the RIBA's 2023 Neave Brown Housing Award.
