Join us at this special celebration of architecture at Newcastle University in London – a one-night only opportunity to view the Architecture Degree Show and a specially-curated discussion marking the launch of the Farrell Centre’s new book, Towards Another Architecture.
Degree Show:
The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University is delighted to invite you to their annual Degree Show. The Degree Show is an exhibition of the hard work and achievements of all stage students across the entire school. It will be a celebratory moment to close a chapter of a year’s worth of hard work – and offer an exciting introduction to the work of the graduating class of 2024!
Book Launch: Towards Another Architecture
Architecture stands today at a crossroads. While it is undoubtedly deeply implicated in the many of the myriad crises that define the contemporary world, architectural thinking and approaches are uniquely placed to offer ways out of the present predicament. But realising this potential requires not just new ideas, but new spaces, cultures and platforms where architecture might be reimagined as an instrument of liberation, empowerment and positive transformation.
This is the thesis of the Farrell Centre’s new book Towards Another Architecture: New Visions for the 21st Century. Edited by the centre’s director, Owen Hopkins, it brings together a wide range contributions articulating visions for ‘another architecture’. Far from being the final word, the book is conceived as the starting point for conversations around the active role architects might play in the role.
To that end, this event brings together speakers to continue, extend and reflect critically on that conversation. Speakers include Elsie Owusu (Architect and Founding Chair of Society of Black Architects) and Sarah Ackland (Muf Architecture and PhD researcher on women in public space).
Towards Another Architecture is published by Lund Humphries and will be available to purchase on the evening.
Booking is encouraged though not essential.
