RCP Museum Late: Reimagining the RCP’s brutalist ‘battleship’ architecture

04 June 2024

17:30 -20:00

Experience the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP) Grade I listed home, where brutalist architecture meets centuries of tradition.

Described as a ‘battleship’ at its 1964 opening, the RCP’s London headquarters is a striking brutalist structure. The iconic, and sometimes controversial, building designed by architect Sir Denys Lasdun, boldly reimagined how the headquarters of England’s oldest medical college would be represented and designed around its occupants.

Learn how our unique building ‘matches and rhymes’ with its classical surroundings. Discover how RCP members – and neighbours – responded to Lasdun’s designs. Explore how later changes enable the building to serve today, in its contemporary reimagining as a modern membership organisation’s HQ, business venue, and public museum.

All guests can explore our unique building and special archival display about the design throughout the evening. There will also be the opportunity to join a guided tour at 6pm with an expert from the RCP Museum team.
