Reimagining the Crystal Palace Dinosaur sculptures in 3D

27 June 2024

19:00 -20:30

The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs have been capturing our imaginations for 170 years. We’ve recently initiated a 3D scanning effort and digital archive that has resulted in detailed digital models of these iconic public artworks. It is now possible to visualise these unique sculptures fully in three dimensions, helping us to better understand the intentions of the original artist and the layers of conservation history in the years since. Digital modelling also opens up possibilities for animation and other artistic applications, enabling new ways of reimagining these globally celebrated works. As the world’s first major achievement in palaeoart, they demonstrated the new science of palaeontology in the Victorian age in a compelling, impressive way; with our new tools we are contributing towards their exciting future.

This demonstration talk will be presented by Rhys Griffin, digital animator and FCPD Project Partner, with opportunities for Q&A.
