Sutton High Street – A Victorian Creation Tour

21 June 2024

10:30 -12:00

The guided walk begins outside the Sutton Train Station, within sight of the prominent residence of E.H Rabbits (1818-74), a rags-to-riches entrepreneur, pivotal to Sutton’s Victorian development.

As we head north along Sutton High Street, we will look at key examples of Victorian and Edwardian building, noting how the contributions of various architects and builders added interest to the suburban streetscape over a period of fifty years or more. Sutton High Street has been reimagined over centuries, and its evolution constantly continues with new regeneration set for the next 10 years. While Sutton High Street sees changes, the historic past is still conserved.

Our journey culminates at Edward Terrace on Marshalls Road. Alongside the town’s first Fire Station, Rabbits ran his own business from the terrace and the building stands testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and enduring impact on the expanding community.

The tour will be led by Andrew Skelton, local historian with particular interest in the Victorian development of the High Street and surrounding suburban residential development.
