The London School of Architecture’s Dalston Pavilion

03 June - 30 June

12:00 -18:00

The London School of Architecture's Dalston Pavilion is sited next to the school’s new home at 4 Beechwood Road. The pavilion is both an outdoor exhibition space, showcasing the LSA's Part 0 campaign to engage with local 11-19 year olds, and a classroom that will host workshops for young people led by the LSA and other like-minded organisations. Programme collaborators include Rio Cinema, Forest Road Youth Hub, Hackney School of Food, RIBA Youth Forum, Open City, Drawing Matter, HomeGrown Plus, Architecture Foundation Young Trustees, East and more.

The structure draws inspiration from mid-sixteenth century 'cabinets of curiosities' that showcased artefacts from the natural world, as well as from the timber roof structure of the nearby Holy Trinity Church. Constructed as a series of A-Frames and openable in-fill panels, the pavilion will be configured to host a range of events, such as talks, panel discussions, workshops and film-screenings in collaboration with Young Hackney, Rio Cinema and other partners.

By installing the pavilion in a public space on the edge of the Rhodes Estate and in close proximity to well-established organisations such as Forest Road Youth Hub, the Dalston Pavilion allows the LSA to deepen its commitment to the borough’s diverse communities, offering free-to-access, high quality workshops for young people that introduce ideas and skills that will help them use design to meet the challenges humanity and the planet face in the context of the Climate Emergency and ecological crisis.

The Pavilion has been designed and built in collaboration with Arup and New School of Furniture Making, with contributions from Studio Superfluo, or.this.co, Olly Studio and Orsman Construction, and generous donations from the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, the Marchus Trust, WISA, Latham Timber and E Roberts Timber.
