The Old Palace – A Walk Through History

02 June 2024

11:00 -15:00

Enjoy a walk through history on a self-guided tour of the Old Palace and grounds in Bromley.
The Old Palace, or Bishop’s Palace, is currently part of Bromley Council’s Civic Centre. The present building dates from 1775 but there has been a manor house in Bromley since the 10th century. The Palace is on the site of a medieval moated house. Parts of the moat are still visible and form the lake in the Palace grounds.

The Old Palace site was owned by the Bishops of Rochester from before the Norman Conquests (1066-1071) up until 1845 when the Palace and its extensive lands were sold to a wealthy businessman called Coles Child. He added additions to the original Georgian structure of the house employing notable architects Richard Norman Shaw and Ernest Newton.

Reimagine the Old Palace as it once was!
