Walk Through a Workhouse

22 June 2024

11:00 -12:30

Join us for a guided walk as we visit Hillside Park and discover the formidable Victorian workhouse that once existed beneath this park's trees.

While meandering along park paths, we will encounter the site of the demolished workhouse, and “walk through its rooms”. Catherine’s temporary site installations will help visualise the workhouse’s original spaces and the harsh daily routines imposed on workhouse inmates. Once we reach the Boardroom, the only surviving part of the workhouse, we will look back in time and investigate the workhouse’s role during the Victorian era.

As we experience the park’s lovely gardens, we can appreciate the site’s transformation from a difficult past into the quiet, peaceful haven that we find today.

This walk is suitable for people of all ages and walking abilities. There are park benches along parts of the route for resting and the park has a very gradual slope. However some of the grass paths through the park are not wheelchair user friendly.
Although there is no off street car parking at the site, there are good public transport connections - Archway tube station (Northern Line) is a 10 minute walk away.
