London Festival of ARchitecture History - 2020 - Power

Festival History | 2020

Power

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 saw a transition of LFA to an online festival, known as ‘LFA Digital’, with a longer Festival Season across the Autumn period. Themed around ideas of ‘power’, the 2020 programme saw organisers examine where power lies, who has power and who should have more power, the role of ‘soft power’ in architecture, and what happens when people are disempowered – topics which were made ever-more pertinent during lockdown and mass public service strains.

Projects included the biggest online Architecture Bake Off, virtual building tours in London and beyond, and key public art and wayfinding installations such as ‘You are here’ in London Bridge, and the co-creation stages of Arch 42 with local schools in Wandsworth. In addition to Festival events in June, the transition online allowed LFA to create some unique Digital content with members of the LFA community, including the very first audio guides celebrating infrastructure projects in the Royal Docks and first 30 objects in 30 days video series running throughout June.

The (online) Architecture Bake Off

The Architecture Bake Off has been a staple of the LFA for many years where architecture practices battle against each other to create cake-based representations of some of London’s most loved buildings. This year we tweaked the format to run the bake off online and opened up the competition to non-architects – with an individual category and kids category.   More than 100 people entered with 80 cakes being submitted. We charged a small...
